Embracing the Winter Solstice
Sunset View Road, Sunset View Rd, North Hero, VT, USWe've found VT winter nights can be long, and the adjustment to less daylight difficult. Our solution? To celebrate the longest night of the year...
Come and embrace the shortest day of the year with hearty food, mulled cider, light and laughter...oh, and of course, a yule log (cake).
WHAT TO EXPECT: When we moved to Vermont, away from our families, we decided we would start a new tradition of celebrating the winter solstice. This is our third attempt of making the longest night special. Our hope is to share a warm, hearty meal (likely beef burgundy or lamb stew), play some music, and exchange books (an Icelandic tradition) or house plants. And, we will have a lit labyrinth (weather permitting).
This year, we thought we would add a music circle. Here are a few of the songs we came up with (trying to stay in the winter theme): "My Favorite Things," "Jingle Bells," Let It Snow," "Deck the Halls," "Walking in a Winter Wonderland," and "Song for a Winter's Night." Feel free to suggest others.
WHAT TO BRING: A beverage or an appetizer to share, a favorite book or house plant to swap, and an instrument if you have one (two spoons count; we have a piano, guitar, pan pipes and a didgeridoo to share). Also, you may want to bring some warm clothes in which to enjoy the labyrinth if we have one.

*What is the 252 Club? (Well, actually it's real name is the "251 Club," but a new town was recently added to the list.) It is a club that people join, touch all 251/2 townships in Vermont, and earn a certificate of completion. Peter and I are simply tracking the towns we touch on our own. Our rule is that we must do some type of activity in the town and then take a picture of ourselves (and anyone we did the activity with) near a sign or structure that is unique to the town.
