GDG Seattle would like to welcome you back to our in-person events at Google Kirkland!

Join us for a few Android ML talks by Thomas and Paul from Google Developers Relations team, and Margaret, ML GDE (Google Developer Expert ).

Agenda

  • 5:30pm doors open for check in
  • 6:00pm light snacks only (no dinner)
  • 6:00pm - 7:15pm talks

Talk 1: How to do machine learning on Android (Thomas Ezan)
Whether you have machine learning experience or are a beginner, Google offers powerful solutions to enable ML in your app.

In this talk you will learn about several ML use cases and see how to use ML Kit and TFLite to implement them.

Thomas Ezan is an Android Engineer. He is currently working in the Android Developer Relations Team at Google working on ML. Before joining Google he spent 6 years in Lyft’s Growth team and worked at Pocket and Eventbrite.

Talk 2: Introduction to MediaPipe for Android (Paul Ruiz)
Need to add machine learning for your apps across multiple platforms?
Yeah, probably.

What about customize your ML experience for your specific use-cases without having to get too far into the underlying details?
I dunno. Maybe.

Well have I got news for you! Google has recently released the MediaPipe Tasks library in alpha preview for cross-platform out-of-the-box and customizable solutions. In this session you’re going to learn about on-device machine learning, some high level concepts behind machine learning and how it works on your device, and how to do some implementation of computer vision, audio classification, and natural language processing in your Android apps. If time permits, we might even dive into training a new model for gesture recognition that can be dropped into your applications. Bring your questions and curiosity as you learn about our newest offerings in on-device machine learning.

Paul Ruiz is a developer relations engineer with Google out of Boulder, Colorado, and has been a full-time Android developer for the last ten years, having started with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) as a student for two years before that (where did my 12 years go!?). Over the last year he has taken his interest and hobby app making with the application of ML on Android into his full-time role with Google’s Core ML team, where he is the primary Android advocate for the new MediaPipe framework and an owner of the open sourced sample apps.

Outside of work Paul makes movie quality props and costumes, plays with electronics and IoT hardware, woodworks, does ridiculously overengineered gardening, and worked as a zookeeper before getting into tech where he primarily worked with giraffes and other hoovestock, though caring for elephants, sea lions+seals, tigers, and grizzly bears weren’t uncommon tasks.

Talk 3: AI for Art and Design (Margaret Maynard-Reid)

A brief overview of how AI can be used to assist and inspire the artists and designers in their creative space. Discuss a few use cases of on-device ML for creating artistic Android apps.

Margaret Maynard-Reid is a Google Developers Expert for machine learning with a passion in art and design. She writes and speaks at conferences about deep learning, computer vision, TensorFlow, and on-device ML. She leads GDG Seattle and Seattle Data/Analytics/Machine Learning. She has taught Android application development for the University of Washington Professional & Continuing Education program.
