Note: this is the 2nd part of our 07MAR meeting - please read below!

"It's on GitHub, just pull down the repo and run it."

These words can be frightening when you're just starting out. There can be a ton of friction when it comes to downloading a new codebase, opening it in an IDE, and running it using a language you've never had on your computer before.

Today, we're going to be talking about basics to reduce that friction:

  • How to set up and use IDEs and tools for working with APIs and Docker images
  • How to work with your systems' path and ensure that you can use new languages like Python or Ruby from the command line
  • An intro to apt-get, yum, brew, and other package management tools
  • Some tips regarding environment variables, git on the command line, and more

Bring your laptop if you can!

Part 2 assumed that you've successfully installed Git and are able to clone repos from GitHub over SSH. If you missed Part 1, please reach out on Discord to get this done ahead of time if you can!

New to Tech is a group meeting monthly targeted at folks who are just starting to learn about software development, up through those already employed in the industry who are targeting their first promotion.* Topics will be presented twice, at the top of the month and then in the back half of the following month.

Topics will be split between software development fundamentals & career guidance and there will be plenty of time for group discussion & live coding. Please bring your laptop!

Feel free to pop into the Gem City Tech discord. More experienced folks are welcome to attend & share their knowledge!
