New To Tech
Details
New to Tech is a group meeting monthly targeted at folks who are just starting to learn about software development, up through those already employed in the industry who are targeting their first promotion.* Topics will be presented twice, at the top of the month and then in the back half of the following month.
Topics will be split between software development fundamentals & career guidance and there will be plenty of time for group discussion & live coding. Please bring your laptop!
Today's meeting will be hosted by Sara Betts! Sara has a ton of experience in professional development curriculum design, equity, and student advocacy - a great match for New to Tech!
Here's what she'll be talking about on Tuesday in her words:
Communication skills are essential for your professional career, nowhere more so than job interviews. There are very few people for whom interviewing comes naturally; the good news is that interviewing is a skill that can be developed through practice, anxiety management, and claiming your power. Interviews are not a one-way street, and understanding the ins and outs of the tech interview will help demystify the process. This session of New to Tech focuses on effective strategies for interviewing and networking, regardless of what tech discipline you’re in. It will be led by Sara Betts, an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati and manager of career advancement for Per Scholas Greater Cincinnati, a national nonprofit organization that provides tuition-free tech bootcamps in IT Support, software engineering, cybersecurity, and more. During this presentation, Sara will cover the 4Cs of interviewing: Conviction, Clarity, Confidence, and Courage.
Feel free to pop into the Gem City Tech discord. More experienced folks are welcome to attend & share their knowledge!
