4 October, Saturday 9am. Heggies Rock. This large protected piedmont granite outcropping located in Columbia County; Georgia is the home of several rare and endangered plants found nowhere else. It was named a National Natural Landmark in 1980 and was purchased by the Georgia Nature Conservancy in 1983. Rising 70 feet above the surrounding area, the rock is a geological wonder. We will explore the geology of the area with Geologist Walt Kubilius and view unique plants with Cathy Black. Because of the limited parking we will meet at 9am at Patriots Park, 5445 Columbia Road, Grovetown, 30813 next to the tennis courts and carpool from there promptly at 9:15am. Bring water, good hiking shoes, and a hat. Sorry no walking sticks, canes, or dogs. This moderate hike over uneven ground will be 2 miles stopping and looking at plants and rocks. Limit 15 people.
