The Social Model and Mike Oliver

Details

The social model is a worldview for disability, where it is society that disables people not their physical impairments.

Proposed as a model for social theory by British activist Mike Oliver in many of his writings, the social model is a cornerstone of our teaching and messaging at Stark. To understand it requires a real shift in worldview from traditional thinking in design, tech, and innovation.

Come join us as we talk about the origins and significance of the social model, and how that maps to lived experiences as wheelchair users and accessibility advocates.

Speakers:
∙ Cat Noone - CEO of Stark
∙ Claudio Luís Vera - Head of Strategy at Stark
∙ Sheri Byrne Haber - Disability Advocate, and A11Y Architect at VMWare
∙ Reginé Gilbert - Designer, Author, and Professor at NYU Tandon
∙ Nic Steenhout - Speaker, Trainer and Consultant on Web Accessibility, Inclusion and Disability.

An ASL interpreter will be present/provided.
