"THE FORGOTTEN" TOUR
Details
1st Pennhurst State School
Enjoy a guided Daytime History Tour of the infamous Pennhurst State School Campus. Professional Pennhurst Historians will be available to answer your questions as they escort groups on this walking tour.
Pennhurst's story echoes that of many of the asylums and institutions. Built in 1908 with high hopes and a sprawling campus that had everything a community could need - including a barber shop, a greenhouse, a fire station, a movie theater, and a general store - Pennhurst rapidly devolved into a site synonymous with well documented overcrowding and neglect that caused the adults and children who resided there to regress further and further from functionality.
Pictures welcome! Limited space on this Tour
2nd The Historic Site Eastern State Prison
Experience –Eastern State Penitentiary, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of the most iconic prisons in American history. Built in 1829, the prison was revolutionary for its time, promoting the concept of solitary confinement as a method of rehabilitation rather than punishment. Known for its striking Gothic architecture, it once held some of the most notorious criminals in history, including mobster Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. The penitentiary operated until 1971, and today it serves as a museum that sheds light on the legacy of prison reform and mass incarceration in the United States.
