It was the Island of hope". The "Island of Tears". The" Island of Fears". That’s how people referred to Ellis Island, depending on their experience. From 1892 to 1954, nearly 12 million people arrived to the US through Ellis Island (nearly 40% of Americans have an ancestor who arrived here) and for many it was representative of freedom, hope, and a new life in America.
If a person was sick, but curable, they might stay in Ellis Island’s hospital for weeks or even months.
In the 60 years of its operation, it provided care and housing for 1.2 million people; 3,500 people died and 300 babies were born there.
Today the island is home to the Immigration Museum and part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, but the former hospital, housing and detention center has been abandoned, mostly left to crumble. It’s off limits to the public…
