About us
Hello! For those who love philosophy, this is a reading group dedicated to classic and trending texts in the field, from Ancient Greek and Chinese philosophy, to Western Modernism and Post-Modernism, to texts from science and other disciplines on the essential questions of human existence. Our goal is to explore answers to those questions and their applications for real life, and to build a community of deep thinkers here in Glasgow. Because we tackle pretty sophisticated texts, we do want all members to have strong reading skills, but beyond that we welcome anyone who is tolerant, thoughtful, and interested in exchanging ideas!

SECOND MEETING: Galileo’s Error
iCafe (Merchant City), 70 Ingram Street, Glasgow, GBWhen Galileo Galilei was developing the scientific method, he realised a form of consciousness might play a critical role in observed phenomena—this is certainly the case for phenomena initiated by conscious beings like humans. However, because consciousness cannot be quantified, he decided to put aside the issue entirely and focus only on countable, measurable data. However, the problem of consciousness continued to re-emerge in science, from Darwin questioning how organisms know how to adapt to their environment at the cellular and atomic level to Einstein’s observation of “spooky action at a distance” at the subatomic level. Phillip Goff’s 2019 book, Galileo’s Error, caused a sensation with its exploration of the theory of panpsychism, which holds that yes, the universe itself is conscious. Join us at the Merchant City iCafe at 6:30 PM to discuss whether this could be true and what it means for us on Planet Earth.
Galileo’s Error by Phillip Goff is available at libraries and local bookstores. You can order it from Amazon at the link below:
