'The Enchiridion' of Epictetus
Champagne Central, Grand Central Hotel, Central Station, Glasgow, GBJoin us Thursday, November 26 for our discussion of Epictetus’ eleven-page Stoic handbook for practical living, ‘The Enchiridon’ from 7 PM to 9 PM at Champagne Central.
Born into slavery and brutally crippled by his own master, Epictetus spent his youth in Rome serving the secretary to Emperor Nero. He was allowed to study under the Roman Senator and Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus, and upon gaining his freedom established philosophy schools in Rome and later Nicopolis, Greece. There he quickly gained a popularity reportedly as great as Plato’s, drawing the audience of eminent leaders including Emperor Hadrian.
Epictetus influenced a number of major philosophers including Marcus Aurelius, Voltaire, Denis Diderot, Blaise Pascal, and Samuel Johnson. ‘The Enchiridon’ is a popular manual distilling his teachings, written by his student Arrian. It teaches readers how to find mental happiness and freedom in daily life.
