'The Grand Inquisitor'

For the next meeting of the Glasgow Philosophy Reading Group, we’ll discuss Fyodor Dostoevsky’s ‘Grand Inquisitor’ chapter from The Brothers Karamazov. This stand-alone story-within-a-story from the 19th Century Russian classic imagines a scene in which Jesus Christ himself is detained and examined by the Spanish Inquisition.
Considered one of the most consequential passages in 19th-century literature, ’The Grand Inquisitor’ asks whether humans really desire free will or instead prefer the certainty of bread with chains, a position which Dostoevsky argued was at the core of the budding socialist movement in Russia. Join us at Cafe Fame, 127 Hope Street, Thursday, June 25th from 7 PM to 9 PM to discuss whether true freedom is something to be feared.
