About us
We are a friendly group of those interested in humanism and secularism, with members coming from Gloucestershire and surrounding areas. We are a partner group of Humanists UK (formerly the British Humanist Association) and affiliated to the National Secular Society (NSS).
We have monthly meetings on a wide array of topics which are open to anyone interested in that month’s discussion: you certainly don’t need to ‘be’ a humanist to come along. Our monthly meetings are currently all virtual via Google Meet and start at 19:30 on the second Thursday of the month.
We meet up socially too, at 10:00 on the last Sunday of the month for breakfast over lively conversation and laughter.
We’re also involved in the local community and a number of our members are accredited Humanist UK celebrants offering non-religious naming, wedding and funeral ceremonies.

Curry and Book Club: "Ultra-processed People" by Chris van Tulleken
The Swan, 35-37 High Street, Cheltenham, GBThe event is in two parts. We will be meeting in-person at 18:00 at The Swan in Cheltenham to make the most of their early bird curry deal*. Then at around 19:00, we will seamlessly shift to hosting our quarterly book club. You are more than welcome to join us for either or both parts! Please drop us a line if you would like any further information.
(*previously the deal has required food to be ordered before 18:00, but note the rules could be different by the time we meet for this session!)
The book up for discussion this month is "Ultra-processed People" by Chris van Tulleken:
"An eye-opening investigation into the science, economics, history and production of ultra-processed food. It's not you, it's the food. We have entered a new 'age of eating' where most of our calories come from an entirely novel set of substances called Ultra-Processed Food, food which is industrially processed and designed and marketed to be addictive. But do we really know what it's doing to our bodies? Join Chris in his travels through the world of food science and a UPF diet to discover what's really going on. Find out why exercise and willpower can't save us, and what UPF is really doing to our bodies, our health, our weight, and the planet (hint: nothing good). For too long we've been told we just need to make different choices, when really we're living in a food environment that makes it nigh-on impossible. So this is a book about our rights. The right to know what we eat and what it does to our bodies and the right to good, affordable food."
