(MS) Camp Old Indian & Old Indian Mountain
Details
M: 5.0, EG: 980', R: MS.
Let's stomp down the thick bed of fallen leaves at 99-year-old Camp Old Indian, then climb through tranquil, bare-tree woodlands to the 2,282' summit of Mt. Old Indian, with inspiring views pushing us upward. We'll visit the camp's pastoral grounds, some wetlands, AND a double waterfall! Thick leaf fall will slow us down a bit. Bring lunch, snacks, water; an extra layer or two; and a walking stick if you use one. Parking is limited so carpooling is highly encouraged for the short drive.
Meet at 8:45 a.m. in Publix Supermarket at University Square, in front of Mr. Salsa, to carpool; depart at 9:00 a.m. Solo drivers meet at trailhead, 519 Callahan Mountain Road, Travelers Rest, at 9:30 a.m. (Note: trailhead is NOT the camp's main gate; it's a smaller lot about 100 yards away, between the historic Poinsett Bridge and the main gate.)
Plan to return by 3:00 pm
Drive RT: 40 miles, Carpool fee: $3.00
