Walk: The Hole Of Horcum (North Yorkshire)

Details
Walk: The Hole Of Horcum
For those travelling to Northumberland early enough on Thursday, there is an opportunity to complete one of two classic walks around The Hole Of Horcum and Levisham Moor in North Yorkshire. Due to the vagueries of bank holiday journey times, please note there is no certainty of arriving as a group, so these routes are self lead unless we have a volunteer who can guarantee to arrive and navigate the route.
EVENT NARRATIVE: This event is part of our Northumberland Easter Getaway for those attending as members of GO:Heart Of England
Northumberland Walking Getaway (Easter 2025), Fri, Apr 18, 2025, 12:30 PM | Meetup
Route Logistics:
We suggest: Be ready to walk at 12:05 if doing the longer route, or at 13:45 if doing the shorter route
Distance: Either 8 miles with pub stop, or 3 miles without
Start Point: Hole Of Horcum viewing point parking area, A169 (about 7 miles north of Pickering), YO18 7NR (W3W=saga.bulge.trickster)
Route Leader: Either TBA or self-led

Terrain: The Hole of Horcum is a spectacular inverted mountain (or crater). To its west, lies Levisham Moor, a bleak unforgiven open ridge. The later stages of either walk are strenuous.
Refreshments: We suggested eating beforehand, but bring snacks/drinks, and there is a possible pubstop at Levisham if doing the longer 8 mile version.
Bring: Waterproofs & Refreshments & Good walking footwear, and clothing to match the weather.
Longer Route: From start point head north alongside road for 1/2 mile to Gallows Dike, and continue along the Tabular Hills path over Levisham Moor meeting Limpsey Gate lane and into Levisham. From there, head into woodland onto Levisham Brow eventually reaching The Hole of Horcum and back to the start.
Shorter Route: From start point head north alongside road for 1/2 mile to Gallows Dike, then descend steeply into The Hole Of Horcum, continue south through Low Horcum, next climbing sharply through woods. At the top turn sharp left and continue for 1 mile back to the start.
SAFETY: As with any outdoor activity, there is some inherent risk. Whilst we aim to avoid unnecessary risks, participants should take all reasonable precautions themselves. Participants are totally responsible for their own safety and should be comfortable walking the specified distance.
