Out on the frontier of the Third Imperium of Humaniti, the stars can look beautiful right up until something goes wrong. The rich core worlds talk about order and prosperity. Out here, that order is a rumor, and prosperity belongs to whoever's holding the gun when the deal goes bad.

You're travellers, people with unfinished business and old debts. Not all of it's financial. Somebody important did you a favor once; pulled you out of a jam; looked the other way when they didn't have to, and now they own a piece of you. Your ship has a questionable past and dubious ownership, but she's more home than any planet you've stayed on for long.

Work is scarce, and clean jobs are scarcer. Lately the jobs have started to rhyme. A refugee who isn't. A courier whose name doesn't check out. Officers who ask questions they already know the answers to.

Somewhere way above your pay grade the powers are jockeying for position. Everyone wants to know whose side you're on, usually right before they try to decide that for you. Nobody's declared anything yet. That's how you know it's serious. You won't get a briefing. You'll get a bad feeling, a favor called in, and a deadline. You'll have to decide who to trust.

The settled worlds are vast. The space between them is bigger. When things go wrong, all you really have is your crew, your ship, and the nerve to keep going when the warning lights come on. So you keep flying. The next job might set you up for good...or be the one you don't walk away from.
