About us
Welcome to all book lovers in Munich. This book club aims to discuss books, foster a love for reading, nurture a passion for books and meet inspiring people. We are an in-person English book club, meeting monthly in a restaurant in Munich.
Operation. Rules of Engagement. Housekeeping:
- We meet consistently every 1st Thursday of the month at 19:00.
- We try and keep the meeting places in Central Munich to make it fair to all who travel. Usually easy to reach with public transport.
- All communication happens on our WhatsApp Group.
- The book schedule is planned a year in advance.
- I am an avid reader and like to keep my finger on the pulse concerning news on authors and book releases. I select the books based on what I see is trending in the world of readers and publishing houses and are featured in the news. I always try and include unknown authors from around the globe as well. I was born and raised in South Africa, so I also love including some emerging authors from Africa. I am open to your suggestions for books, and I will include them in the poll. Please WhatsApp your book recommendations to me privately.
- All types of readers are welcome, Audio Books, Kindle and paper lovers. I am a busy working mother, so I love a mixture of all of these. It depends on what's happening in my busy household—no shame in listening to audiobooks while waiting for a train or doing the washing.
- Consistency is key to making a club a success. I strictly stick to 1st Thursday of the month at 19:00 to keep the book club consistent. Moving dates around become a nightmare to manage amongst many readers.
- We prefer to meet like-minded readers here in Munich. After each meet-up, I post summaries of what we have read and discussed on the Whatsapp group.
- The language used for all books, discussions, and communication is English.
- I would like to encourage mothers out there to join for their sanity. Your partner, husband, babysitter, or someone can watch the kids for one night of the week. They will be ok. ;) It is important to take time for yourself.

Winner for Readers' Favorite Science Fiction (2024), Nominee for Readers' Favorite Debut Novel (2024)
A time travel romance, a spy thriller, a workplace comedy, and an ingenious exploration of the nature of power and the potential for love to change it all: Welcome to The Ministry of Time, the exhilarating debut novel by Kaliane Bradley. In the near future, a civil servant is offered the salary of her dreams and is, shortly afterward, told what project she’ll be working on. A recently established government ministry is gathering “expats” from across history to establish whether time travel is feasible—for the body, but also for the fabric of space-time.
She is tasked with working as a “bridge”: living with, assisting, and monitoring the expat known as “1847” or Commander Graham Gore. As far as history is concerned, Commander Gore died on Sir John Franklin’s doomed 1845 expedition to the Arctic, so he’s a little disoriented to be living with an unmarried woman who regularly shows her calves, surrounded by outlandish concepts such as “washing machines,” “Spotify,” and “the collapse of the British Empire.” But with an appetite for discovery, a seven-a-day cigarette habit, and the support of a charming and chaotic cast of fellow expats, he soon adjusts.
Over the next year, what the bridge initially thought would be, at best, a horrifically uncomfortable roommate dynamic, evolves into something much deeper. By the time the true shape of the Ministry’s project comes to light, the bridge has fallen haphazardly, fervently in love, with consequences she never could have imagined. Forced to confront the choices that brought them together, the bridge must finally reckon with how—and whether she believes—what she does next can change the future.
An exquisitely original and feverishly fun fusion of genres and ideas, The Ministry of Time asks: What does it mean to defy history, when history is living in your house? Kaliane Bradley’s answer is a blazing, unforgettable testament to what we owe each other in a changing world.
