What we’re about
This a book club for anyone in the Washington, DC area who wants to get together to discuss works written in or about Ancient Greece or Rome. This includes drama, literature, poetry, philosophy, history and really anything else of interest to members.
All books will be read in English so no prior knowledge of Greek or Latin is needed. As long as you have an interest in these two civilizations and the motivation to tackle some of the great works they produced you will fit right in! In the spirit of democracy, members will get to vote on what they want to read next in each meeting.
Meetings will be in-person so that we can get to know each other and to make sure that discussion are casual and free flowing. We usually meet at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, but the venue may change as needed.

See all- The Argonautica Discussion @ MLK Jr. Memorial LibraryMartin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, Washington, DC
For our May meeting, we will be setting sail with Jason, Medea, and the Argonauts as they seek the golden fleece in The Argonautica, by Apollonius Rhodius. This epic poem was highly influential in ancient times, and later inspired the classic film Jason and the Argonauts.
As for translations, I've heard good things about Richard Hunter's version for Oxford Press, available here. But feel free to bring whichever one you prefer.
We will be meeting in the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in the 205-B Accessibility Room, located on the second floor in the back of the Center for Accessibility. The library is available from the red/yellow/green lines via Gallery Place and the blue/silver/orange lines via Federal Triangle. The meeting will also be accessible virtually on Zoom here. See you there!
