Merry Loma Alta and a Happy 680
Details
Join us for a holiday hike led by Michael Landram in the Marin County Loma Alta and Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Open Space Preserves in Lucas Valley. Let’s celebrate the season from atop Loma Alta, the fourth highest point in Marin County. The views north to Big Rock Ridge and south to San Francisco are delightful! We’ll also traverse the newest trail in the open space system, dedicated in 2012.
Trailhead: This hike requires a car shuttle. We’ll meet at the parking lot at the southeast corner of the intersection of Lucas Valley Road and Mt. Muir Court in Lucas Valley. We’ll leave half the cars there. We’ll drive the other cars to the Big Rock trailhead located at the watershed divide on Lucas Valley Rd., where the hike begins. Hikers that wish to go part way up and back should meet us there.
Route: This hike goes up the Loma Alta Fire Road, across on the new 680 Trail, and down the Luiz Ranch and Terra Linda Ridge Fire Roads. The hike starts at an altitude of 630 feet and climbs to a high point of 1,590 feet on Loma Alta before descending to the parking lot at 120 feet. Total distance is about 6.6 miles horizontal or 7.2 miles adjusted for slope. We’ll plan 4 hours for this hike. Think twice before signing up for the entire length; it is a long way.
