You are cordially invited to enjoy an afternoon and evening of tasting delicious wines and foods at Cindy's home on Saturday, May 2nd from 5pm to 8pm.
An array of hot foods and nibbles will be provided.
This is a Kentucky Derby event; you are strongly encouraged (but not required) to wear "Kentucky Derby" clothing. The Derby is a "see and be seen" fashion event where the goal is to look vibrant, upscale, and slightly theatrical.
For women, the wide-brimmed "Southern Belle" hats are the standard, though smaller, ornate headpieces are now popular. For dresses, the tradition is spring florals, pastels, or bold "Crayola" colors. Lengths are typically knee-length or midi to keep things elegant but practical for walking.
For men, the tradition is to wear a Seersucker or lightweight linens. As for colors, men are traditionally in lime green, bright pink, or tropical blue blazers paired with vineyard-style vine ties or bowties. Shoes tend to be classic leather loafers or boat shoes (usually worn without socks).
Please bring a bottle of your favorite wine. If you wish to bring a “Derby” wine, consider bringing a bourbon-barrel-aged red wine.
The hallmark drink at the Derby is, of course, the Mint Julep. Mint Juleps will be provided by Cindy!
Bringing a dish to share is appreciated, but not required. If you decide to bring a dish and would like to bring a “Derby” food, the following are Derby traditions:
Kentucky Hot Brown: An open-faced sandwich with turkey and bacon, smothered in a rich Mornay sauce and baked until crispy.
Burgoo: A thick, hearty "mulligan" stew made with various meats (traditionally pork, beef, and mutton) and plenty of vegetables.
Derby Pie: A chocolate and walnut tart (often with a splash of bourbon) in a pastry crust. Note: The name is trademarked by Kern’s Kitchen, so you’ll often see it called "Bourbon Chocolate Nut Pie."
Benedictine Spread: A green cucumber-and-cream-cheese spread created in Louisville, usually served on tea sandwiches.
Bourbon Balls: Decadent confections made of crushed pecans, butter, chocolate, and—of course—bourbon.
The Kentucky Derby is called “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” The race starts at 6:57 pm. There will be live Derby viewing on a large screen TV. Before the race, Cindy may arrange for bets to be placed on horses for those who are interested.
Please bring your own wine glass.
Unless it rains, shoes are allowed.
No smoking or vaping on property.
Cindy lives at 47 Otago Place in Greenville. You may park on the street. No parking on grass. Please be respectful of neighbors' driveways.
Thank you! Looking forward to celebrating with you.
Please RSVP at your earliest convenience. And if you are later unable to attend, please be courteous to those on the waiting list to cancel at least 48 hours before the event.
