About us
Groundwork
Roll. Learn. Connect.
Groundwork is a free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu open mat in Newham, hosted by Grappling With Life CIC.
We bring people together from across the BJJ community to meet new training partners, enjoy some rounds and learn from each other in a relaxed, friendly environment. Whatever your club, team or affiliation, you’re welcome.
Good training. Good people.
Gi or no-gi. Hobbyist or competitor. White belt or experienced grappler.
You don’t need to prove anything. Bring a good attitude, look after your training partners and help make this a room people want to come back to.
Groundwork is open to adults, white belt and above, with space to sit, chat and connect between rounds.
More than an open mat
Grappling With Life CIC uses BJJ and mentoring to help children and young people in Newham build confidence, resilience and connections.
Groundwork helps grow a community around that work. Coming along, getting to know us and sharing what we do can lead to new connections, support and opportunities for the young people we work with.

Come for the rolls. Stay for the people.
