Java isn't just for crusty old enterprise applications. Millions of modern microservices are written in Java and the framework of choice for Java microservices is Spring Boot.

Spring Boot is an open source framework for Java/Kotlin/Groovy that greatly simplifies the common boilerplate code needed for microservices and allows developers to focus their energy on implementing user stories. In this talk we’ll do a quick overview of the main features of Spring Boot, and then we'll transition to a live coding example where we will build a simple microservice that enables CRUD operations on a database table. Time permitting, we'll also cover some of the newer features in Spring Boot including container image building and simplified metrics collection with Wavefront.

Jeff Butler is a Senior Solution Engineer for VMware handling all things related to containers, Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, and Spring for VMware customers in Indiana and Western Michigan. Jeff has been active in open source for over 15 years and is the creator of MyBatis Generator and MyBatis Dynamic SQL. As a developer, he loves how self-service infrastructure is helping clear barriers for developers getting code into production.
