💻 The talks
- Stuart Harris, Founder at Red Badger — 'WebAssembly and scale-to-zero for more sustainable computing'
Amidst the AI revolution, a quieter innovation has been unfolding. WebAssembly, a binary instruction format, has the potential to revolutionise the way we compute. With its platform-agnostic, efficient, and secure properties, WebAssembly could be the key to unlocking sustainable computing. This talk will explore how WebAssembly can reduce energy consumption and optimise resource utilisation. Join us to discover the hidden potential of WebAssembly in driving a more sustainable computing future. - Asim Hussain, Executive Director at Green Software Foundation — 'Tipping the Scales: Democratising Measurement'
For thousands of years, those calling the shots have exploited our lack of literacy in measurement to tip the scales to their advantage. Now, in a digital age where the boundary of “software” is almost impossible to pin down, it’s easier than ever for that advantage to grow. It's time to fight back, but not with placards and posters, with spreadsheets and standards.
In this talk, I’ll walk you through the surprising ways measurement has historically been used to seize and sometimes reclaim power. We’ll fast-forward to today’s sustainability battlefield, where the Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) specification from the Green Software Foundation represents a democratic, consensus-based standard to measure software’s environmental impact. I’ll show you how to calculate SCI for your own software, using the open-source Impact Framework. Along the way, we’ll also discuss the rise of a new kind of activist—the “watchers”—who use transparent metrics and tooling to keep the system honest.
By the end, you’ll understand why measurement matters, how to keep tabs on your software’s carbon footprint, and how to become part of this growing movement. It’s time to tip the scales back in our favor—one calculation at a time.
