We weren’t planning another Galicia trip so soon… but summer isn’t quite over yet. So we’re crossing the border once again for a last-minute day trip to Combarro, Sanxenxo and Portonovo. 🌊

Combarro alone is worth the journey. ✨
A beautiful fishing village on the Ría de Pontevedra, with narrow granite streets, traditional Galician houses and the famous hórreos standing right beside the sea.

And come hungry. 🐙🦐 Galicia is famous for its seafood: octopus, mussels, clams, scallops, grilled fish, empanada… preferably with a drink overlooking the water. 🍷

Then we continue to Sanxenxo, with its marina, promenade, restaurants and famous Silgar Beach, before heading to Portonovo, known for its fishing-port atmosphere, seafood and beaches such as Baltar. 🏖️

If September gives us a sunny day, we may even enjoy one last beach day of the year. ☀️

Forget everything you think you know about Friday the 13th.

In Montalegre, the unluckiest day of the calendar becomes one of Portugal’s most extraordinary nights.

For one night, this medieval town in the mountains of Barroso is transformed. The castle glows over thousands of visitors, witches and demons take over the streets, fire lights up the darkness and centuries-old legends, superstition and local traditions come alive.

At the heart of Montalegre’s Friday the 13th tradition is one of its most iconic rituals: the Queimada and the Esconjuro.

A traditional aguardente-based drink is set alight while the famous incantation is recited — a ritual filled with fire, mysticism and symbolism, traditionally associated with driving away evil spirits, curses and the evil eye.

And that’s only part of it.

Expect a whole town living the theme: street entertainment, witches, demons, music, performances around the historic centre, the medieval castle as a backdrop and an atmosphere unlike any other.

This isn’t Halloween.

This is Montalegre on Friday the 13th.
