In Montalegre, the unluckiest day of the calendar becomes one of Portugal’s most extraordinary nights.

For one night, this medieval town in the mountains of Barroso is transformed. The castle glows over thousands of visitors, witches and demons take over the streets, fire lights up the darkness and centuries-old legends, superstition and local traditions come alive.

At the heart of Montalegre’s Friday the 13th tradition is one of its most iconic rituals: the Queimada and the Esconjuro.

A traditional aguardente-based drink is set alight while the famous incantation is recited — a ritual filled with fire, mysticism and symbolism, traditionally associated with driving away evil spirits, curses and the evil eye.

And that’s only part of it.

Expect a whole town living the theme: street entertainment, witches, demons, music, performances around the historic centre, the medieval castle as a backdrop and an atmosphere unlike any other.

This isn’t Halloween.

This is Montalegre on Friday the 13th.

On Saturday, 21 November, Comedy Cachet brings Phil Kay and friends to Maria Pistolas for a night of English stand-up that could go absolutely anywhere.

Phil Kay is a Scottish comedy original: a brilliant storyteller with a wild imagination and no interest in staying still behind a microphone. His stories turn into full-body performances — bizarre encounters from around the world, everyday observations that take a strange turn, outrageous detours, conceptual one-liners and songs made up on the spot.

The Scotsman called him “unbeatable” when he’s on form. The Times noted that Phil was telling stories on stage long before storytelling became a recognised part of stand-up. But the best way to understand Phil Kay is to see him live. No two shows are the same.

Not fluent in English? Come anyway. Phil is physical, animated and wildly expressive. You might miss a word here and there, but you won’t miss the madness.

Local opening acts will join the line-up and bring their own flavour to the night.
