0x1D Wellington Meetup: Crack Me (If you can)

We’re excited to bring another interactive Hack the Box (HTB) meetup to Wellington!

Join us for a light-hearted dive into the world of password hashing and cracking. From common password habits and terrible choices, to what should happen behind the scenes when you click “login”, and what we’ve seen happen instead. Let us explore the good, and the bad, and what improvements are being made each step of the way.

Important

For this session, the associated lab will be offline. Please make sure you bring the following with you:

1. Linux virtual machine
2. Hashcat
3. rockyou wordlist (comes with Kali Linux) and any other wordlists you want

Guest wifi will be available but there is a strong chance it will be heavily restricted.

WHAT TO EXPECT

• A hands-on, guided walk through to solve a machine yourself.
• A presentation on the key concepts, penetration testing tools, and recommended remediation.

WHAT YOU GET

• A laptop
• A Hack The Box account
• Discord application
• Linux VM with Hashcat installed and the rockyou wordlist downloaded

• Follow all rules and guidelines in the HTB TOS: HTB Terms of Service
• Active HTB content cannot be shared publicly. Retired challenges or machines are fair game.

EVENT DETAILS

• Date: Tuesday, May 26th, 2026
• Time: 5:30 PM (NZDT)
• Location: BNZ Place, Level 12, 1 Whitmore Street, Wellington
• Attendee limit: 25 + speakers, and hosts.
• When you arrive: please wait in the lobby and you will be escorted up. We also ask that you please stay in our allocated area and don't wander around.
