Four Extension Points, One Mental Model: Rules, Skills, Hooks, and MCP in Practice
Abstract:
AI coding tools have four extension points: Rules, Skills, Hooks, and MCP. Most engineers are only using one of them, which is why their setups can feel more like autocomplete than truly agentic systems. In this session, we'll unpack each layer, anchor them to a single mental model (probabilistic vs. deterministic), and work through a four-question framework you can use to decide which extension point fits any given task. We'll close with an example production stack and the most common configuration mistake, so you can walk away ready to ship a better setup the same day.
