This fall, we are pleased to host a special event in partnership with the Solutions Journalism Network and the Online News Association. Please join us for an evening at Northwestern University's SF campus to discuss the theme building trust in media and what we’ve learned over the past year.

Over the past year, building trust in media has been a prime topic for newsrooms, journalists and others in the field. We want to move the conversation to practical tips and lessons that people have learned over the past year, and then we'll open the floor to the community. We'll have speakers from AJ+, the Solutions Journalism Network, the Mozilla Foundation and others to talk about their experiences over the past year and foster a conversation around this critical topic.

SPEAKERS

Monika Bauerlein is CEO of Mother Jones, the American Society of Magazine Editors’ 2017 Magazine of the Year. Previously, she served as co-editor with Clara Jeffery, who is now editor-in-chief. Together, they spearheaded an era of editorial growth and innovation, marked by the addition of a 15-person Washington bureau and a digital strategy that grew MotherJones.com's traffic more than twentyfold. As CEO, Bauerlein has focused on expanding MoJo’s journalistic capacity on core beats and signature investigations—such as 2016’s private prison exposé and MoJo’s scoop on the Russia memos—while developing a new business model built on engagement and reader support. In the past she has also worked as an alt-weekly editor, political reporter, corporate trainer, sausage slinger and fishing-line packager. She lives in Oakland.

Hadley Robinson leads the engagement team at AJ+, which means reporting the latest news and conversations, reading the comments, listening to the audience, and applying their feedback to our storytelling. Hadley's past work includes several years covering the federal courts and the law. She also reported for local news organizations in various parts of the country, which helped inform her on how to build relationships between journalists and the communities they cover.

Phillip Smith is a Mozilla Senior Fellow for Media, Misinformation & Trust (http://www.phillipadsmith.com/2017/05/double-rainbows-business-models-for-accountability-journalism-misinformation-and-trust-in-news.html) and a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford (http://jsk.stanford.edu/) (2017-2018). He’s a veteran digital product developer, having spent more than two decades working with the the world’s top newsrooms & publishers. Phillip also founded the Uncharted Journalism Fund (https://unchartedjournalism.org/) to explore how journalism philanthropy can support bold, adventurous storytelling in a shrinking media environment. His unrelenting passion is to make society a more informed, connected, and empowered place. MODERATOR

Catherine Cheney is the West Coast ambassador for the Solutions Journalism Network, which trains and connects journalists to cover responses to problems. She's also the West Coast correspondent for Devex, the media company for the global development community, and is focused primarily on the role of technology and innovation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Previously, Catherine has worked with a range of media outlets, including POLITICO, World Politics Review, and NationSwell, a media company and membership network she helped to build.
