Like Having an Intern? The Impact of LLMs on Software Engineering Careers

The August Haifa::C++ meetup is a first: in partnership with the GDG Haifa group, we are featuring a talk co-created by a software engineer and a sociologist. At the meetup, Tom Sellek will present his research, conducted with professor Netta Avnoon, about the impact LLMs have on skill acquisition and expertise in software engineering.

Talk abstract:
In this cross-disciplinary talk, developed by a software engineer and a sociologist of professions and expertise, we present what peer-reviewed research has to say about the impact LLMs have on skill acquisition and expertise in software engineering. We explore how LLM use interacts with established models of expertise development and the far-reaching consequences this interaction has on the junior-to-senior progression in software engineering.

Speaker bio:
Tom Sellek first got paid to code in 2000. He worked in the Windows Kernel domain for most of his career, and in the last decade, he’s been a team lead at three different companies. Tom has spoken about leadership and other "people stuff" at CppNorth, CppCon, and NDC Toronto.
