Hike through the Marsh at Ragged Island
Details
This will be an out and back hike of about 4 miles total on the shoreline of the James River in Carrolton, VA near the south end of the James River Bridge. We will have beautiful views of the James on one side and the 1537 acre Ragged Island Island Wildlife Management Area ( https://dwr.virginia.gov/wma/ragged-island/ )
on the other. There is a small parking area but no potable water or port-a-potties. The walking surface will be uneven and wet many areas. We will be beside and in a marsh so be prepared for bugs. Most of the hike will be without benefit of shade.
**The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) REQUIRES VISITORS TO OBTAIN AN ACCESS PERMIT UNLESS THEY POSSESS A VALID VIRGINIA HUNTING, FRESHWATER FISHING, OR TRAPPING LICENSE, OR A CURRENT VIRGINIA BOAT REGISTRATION. THOSE ACCESS PERMITS COST $4 AND CAN BE BOUGHT ONLINE AT: https://gooutdoorsvirginia.com**
The site will require you to set up an account to purchase the permit. After I set up my account I used the customer service number (866-721-6911) to purchase my one day permit. A digital copy of the permit is then sent to you via email.
It's been a couple of years since we've done a hike here so let's go!
