The trail is open, contrary to what AllTrails indicates, and not affected by the Gifford Fire which started 3 weeks ago.
Meet at the Nordic Base parking lot, 0900 sharp.
At 8,400’ elevation Sheep Camp is the highest campground in the Los Padres National Forest.
This primitive campground is very spacious with lots of shade.
From the Mt Pinos Nordic Base parking lot, elevation 8,300’, the trail takes us up to Mt Pinos at 8,800’, the high point, and as we enter the Chumash Wilderness it continues until we reach Sheep Camp at 8,400’.
Considered a beginner to intermediate level, distance is about 5 miles each way.
Elevation gain/loss is about 1,900’.
Spring water might be at a trickle this time of the year.
Bring 4 liters of water with you, just to be sure.
You can hang your food bag, or you can bring a bear canister.
From downtown LA it usually takes about 1 hour 40 minutes to reach the Mt Pinos Nordic Base parking lot.
