Folks we are pleased to bring a Lunch time session by our friend Ronen Ariely who you probably already heard about as he is well familiar in the data platforms communities, leading multiple events like the Future Data Driven summit and speaks around the world
Abstract:
SQL Server & Azure SQL are often considered as just another Relational Database Management System (RDBMS), but are these really their limitations?
RDBMS is a type of DBMS that organizes data in a tabular form of rows and columns, based on the relational model of data.
The traditional DBA role, which primarily involves working with RDBMS databases, running queries against tables, and managing the database, is well-understood. However, it’s less commonly known that SQL Server offers powerful, less-known tools that extend beyond the confines of the database or the server instance.
These less-known allow you to connect to and control the host environment, run shell commands, edit the OS registry, process and analyze data using embedded external tools/languages, execute external applications, work with the Component Object Model (COM), connect to online services and applications using HTTP(s) requests, and more… and all this using simple Transact-SQL queries.
I will open this session with a review of some of the documented tools and features, followed by a deep dive into undocumented tools and new features added in recent years up to SQL Server 2022 and Azure SQL in 2024.
This is not a theory! I will demonstrate real-life practical cases you can use for daily work.
