Walk with Ray: Flash Made Easy

Location: Ray's House in HdG
(indoor event. Address will be sent to participants)

  • DATE: 18 Jan 2026 (Sunday)
  • Time: 10:00am-12:00pm
  • Price: FREE
  • SUMMARY:

If you are scared of flash photography or just don't understand it, thinking it is too complicated, come with me and let's try to simplify it. Like anything in photography, there are 100 ways to do things....let me show you what I do to make it easy and let's give it a try.

This can be used outside, inside, and anywhere you need light. This is NOT a portrait exercise and I will not have any models, but we can use any subject to practice. I want to go over how to setup your camera and flash for the look you are looking for (I hope).

My goal is to provide you with a better understanding on the steps to setup flash and the different ways you can use it. I hope to take some of the fear out of the process to get you to practice more.

We will meet at my house because it is going to be cold outside, so I don't want to freeze! We will be indoors for most of the time but may step outside for a short time to practice in different environments.

Notes:
I live in a gated community so access is by pass only. I will provide passes the day before via text/email. You can scan into the gate using this pass. You can email me directly with your email and phone number so I can send you the pass. ([president@hcphotogroup.org](mailto:president@hcphotogroup.org))

Like any other house, I am limited on space both for parking and inside so I might have to limit the number of folks to no more than 10.

Equipment Needed:

  • DSLR/Mirrorless Camera (sorry no cell phones....I don't know of any flashes [other than ProFoto] that work with phones)
  • Lens: compact prime or short zoom/telephoto lenses.
  • Flash (If you have a Godox trigger, bring it and use my flashes)
  • Tripod/Monopod
  • ND Filters will help slow shutter speeds if you need to

Camera familiarity PRIOR to event (Refer to your camera manual):
- Know how to use your camera in Manual Mode
- Know how to adjust the Exposure using Aperture, Shutter, and ISO
- Know how to connect your flash to your camera/trigger
- Know how to connect your trigger to your camera

I am no expert at these techniques, but come with me and we can learn and experiment together.

There is no cost, but I will have to limit to 10 people.
