As the practice of medicine continues to advance, we realize that many aspects of health care are beyond the reach of traditional medicine. We cannot treat diabetes without considering diet and exercise; we cannot treat chronic pain without assessing emotional and mental health statuses. As a result, the idea of Integrative Medicine has become more popular in recent years. Integrative Medicine emphasizes holistic approaches that take into account not only physical but also mental, emotional, social, and environmental factors around our health. Practices such as Acupuncture and Reiki are currently recognized by Stanford and Johns Hopkins in their integrative health programs to aid patients in recovery.
