The Electronic Capture of Patient Reported Information-The Last Mile in HIT
Details
The method for capturing patient reported information, yes those darn doctor office 'intake' forms, have been part of healthcare for hundreds of years. Historically this form of "patient reported information" has been ubiquitous; providers "ask" patients questions regarding their past medical history on paper 'intake forms' that they give patients in the waiting room.
The world is moving towards 'electronic capture', which requires a fundamental shift in the approach to health IT because it must be patient-usable. There are multiple modes for this data collection and many advantages to electronic capture, particularly for complex information. However, there are many issues related to patient use of such technology, including how to handle highly variable technical skill sets and attitudes towards technology among diverse patient populations.
What are the challenges and approaches to solving technology based issues like negative attitudes or lack of experience among patients? What other factors are making the electronic-as-a-standard difficult to implement?
