Many people hear voices, see visions, or have similar unusual sensory experiences.
The hearing Voices Network (HVN) was founded in Europe in the 1980’s and has become a successful international, peer-led support organisation for people who hear voices or have visions but don’t want to be labeled or treated as having a serious mental illness.
Various sources suggest that around 10% of the general population have these sorts of experiences but most don’t talk about them for fear of stigma, ridicule or coercive involuntary treatment.
When treated with respect , empathy and understanding, most people are able to learn to manage these extra sensory faculties. Moving away from a bio-medical framework that labels and then treats people as victims of an “incurable brain disease” has helped many reduce isolation and reclaim a sense of hope and ownership over their lives.
HVN has many support groups in the UK, Europe and the USA. The movement has expanded to over 30 countries across five continents driven by impressive results and lasting, permanent change. These HVN groups provide a transformative space where individuals are supported and helped to understand, cope with, and find meaning in their experiences.
Unfortunately, due to government funding cutbacks, there are only a few HVN groups currently operating in Australia. I am told that current demand for these groups far exceeds supply and that existing groups operating in Melbourne have no current vacancies.
To try and help alleviate this problem in a small way I am in the process of establishing an HVN group in the outer eastern Melbourne suburbs.
I am also talking to people interested in trying to revitalise the HVN movement in Australia
