Clean Jordan Lake: Boaters Needed to Ferry Trash to Robeson Creek Boat Ramp

Targeted Cleanup Area.
This year we are targeting a portion of the shoreline near the Haw River and Robeson Creek that is ringed with wetlands. This is one of the most sensitive areas of Jordan Lake. While it should be ringed with wetlands, instead there is a 2000 foot long, 200 foot wide pile of trash! We have put months into planning, with numerous county, state, and federal agencies supporting Clean Jordan Lake with staff, supplies, and vehicles. This will be our most complex clean up yet. Access to the site will either be by walking on maintained "double-track" trails or by boat. If you are boating, read on for details. Meetup Details for Boaters
This "Meetup" is for volunteers who are bringing boats. Your mission would be to move trash that is collected by the Jordan Lake Army of walkers at trash collection points along the Jordan Lake Shoreline, not far from the boat ramp. Kayaks and canoes are welcome as well. They can be used either to ferry trash bags or to get to otherwise inaccessible shoreline sections where you can land and bag trash as well.

Assistance will be provided at the Robeson Creek boat ramps as to assignments for each of you. Click on the Location link above to get directions to the boat ramp and a detailed map. A few pictures at https://www.flickr.com... (https://www.flickr.com/groups/cleanjordanlake) give examples of how this process works. Some of the trash sites are best accessible by paddlers only. Most boats are able to handle 4-5 tires. However, we have approximately 500 to move! It would be awesome if you have a flat bottom work boat and some plywood!

Clean Jordan Lake will provide bottled water and limited snacks, but you may want to bring your own.

The event starts at 9am and concludes at 2pm. Participation for the entire time is not obligatory. Access to the shore is shallow water (soft silt). In past events, lifting the lower unit allowed most boats to get in to the shore. This operation will result in your boat getting dirty. We don't recommend volunteering your brand new ski boat! You will want to bring a tarp. Wearing of PFDs and other applicable Coast Guard regulations apply.

Description of Meetup Location for Boaters
The meetup is at the Robeson Creek Boat Ramp on Hanks Chapel Road n Pittsboro, NC, off US 64. The boat ramp location does NOT show up on personal navigation devices. We ask that you consult this link and online resources (State Park web page, Google Maps, etc..) before calling event staff for directions.

A large amount of trash has to be moved from designated trash collection points in the cove area to the Robeson Creek Boat Ramp (1 mile). Maps of the trash collection point will be available at the boat ramp on the day of the event. Two dumpsters will be placed at the boat ramp to deposit the trash.

Release Forms to Participate
Adults must sign the liability release form (https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/CLEAN%20JORDAN%20LAKE%20Volunteer%20Release%20Form%209-9-10.pdf) that can either be downloaded here or obtained at the event. Parents or guardians of Minors MUST DOWNLOAD THE PARENTAL PERMISSION SECTION OF THE LIABILITY RELEASE FORM AND SIGN PRIOR TO THE EVENT. Minors MUST BRING THE SIGNED FORM to the event. Minors age 5 to 15 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN. While Minors age 16 or 17 do not need to be accompanied to the event by an adult, they still need to bring the signed form.

History of Jordan Lake Cleanup

In 2008, a wonderful group of volunteers filled up a 40-foot dumpster in 5 hours. They then filled another dump truck and then all of the pickups in the parking lot. In March 2010, volunteers with the Haw River Assembly filled up ANOTHER 40-foot dumpster. A 40-foot dumpster is like...HUGE! There was that much trash floating around in the lake. In May of 2010, over 150 people filled up two dumpsters in 5 hours at the Jordan Dam! These volunteers are a hardy bunch: they collected trash from boats, canoes, kayaks, even a few inner tubes. We're making a dent! This month, during a corporate event, 150 GlaxoSmithKline employees will be cleaning Jordan Lake.

Our Goal for Saturday, October 9, 2010 Cleanup
We hope that 600 volunteers attend in order to reach our first-year goal of having 1000 people helping to clean Jordan Lake. The Jordan Lake United States Corps of Engineers, North Carolina Big Sweep, NCDOT's Highway Stormwater Program, the Haw River Assembly, The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, The North Carolina Forest Service, and Clean Jordan Lake would like to invite you to help from 9 AM to 2 PM at the Robeson Creek Boat Ramp if a boater or the end of Seaforth Road if a walker. In addition to directions provided here, you can check the meetup locations for boaters and walkers on Google Earth, or email for directions.

You may show up anytime in the morning of the event, although we prefer between 7 AM and 9 AM. You can leave any time.

As an added incentive to volunteer, a free pass to a Federally managed public land that charges a user fee, e.g.,Sliding Rock in the N.C. mountains, will be given to the first 100 volunteers who show up at the registration table. These passes have been made possible by the US Department of the Army, the US Department of Agriculture, and the US Department of the Interior.
