Annual Spring Cleanup - Take 2!

Details

In honor of Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger's leadership and key role in convening the Jordan Lake One Water Coalition, and in conjunction with Chatham Creek Week and Keep Durham Beautiful, we cordially invite you to help support the spring lake cleanup, led by Clean Jordan Lake, a nonprofit that mobilizes people to clean pollution from the lake.

We will be revisiting an area we last cleaned in 2019. This site was heavily trashed after the January rains, and it's easier walking and a lot closer to parking than the area we cleaned last year.

WHERE TO MEET
The location is the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Game Land Access reached by short gravel road off the end of Seaforth Rd., near US 64 in Pittsboro.

For GPS, use 2999 Seaforth Rd, Pittsboro. that gets you to the turn onto gravel road.
NOTE: THE LOCATION IS NOT THE SEAFORTH ACCESS TO JORDAN LAKE STATE PARK!

Here's a map showing the area we'll be covering.

PARKING
Parking is very limited, so please carpool or get dropped off to save room along the narrow road. We will have volunteers helping organize parking.

ASSIGNMENTS

WALKERS: You will be divided into groups at registration.

BOATERS: Boaters are needed to ferry some volunteers, and help to haul trash back to the dumpster at the Army Corps Bulkhead. Boaters only wishing to ferry volunteers are welcome.

WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED

Since 2009, more than 860 cleanup events have attracted 10,500 volunteers to our cause. Beauty and wildlife habitats have been restored along 30 miles of the worst impacted shoreline. More than 21,000 bags of trash (roughly 214 tons!) have been removed. Many other objects are too large to fit into trash bags such as basketballs, propane gas tanks, hot water heaters, car parts, pesticide sprayers, gasoline cans, and pails of industrial adhesives. In addition, volunteers have rolled more than 5,100 tires, many still on rims, to boats and off again at boat ramps to stack for later pick up.
