What is this?

Her Adventure is growing! Due to the popularity of local Austin hikes, we have recognized the need to provide more hiking opportunities for our members. In order to do that, we are seeking volunteer hike leaders to organize and lead some hikes.

What is Her Adventure?

Her Adventure cultivates a supportive community where women can discover their strength and potential as hikers and adventurers. We inspire and equip individuals to explore the trails and the backcountry, fostering confidence and a sense of belonging in the outdoors.

What do Volunteer Hike Leaders do?

We ask that volunteer hike leaders enjoy being around people, able to make people feel welcomed, able to walk 5 miles without issues, and able to represent the core tenants of Her Adventure; namely, providing opportunities for women be their authentic selves and make friends in nature. We ask for a commitment of leading 2 hikes per year.

What are the requirements?

If you volunteer for this role, we ask that you lead two (or more!) hikes per calendar year. Hikes can be any time of the week (we’ve found most success on weekend or weekday evening hikes) and for any length between 2-6 miles. You first fill out this interest form. We are hosting a 1 hour info session on June 24 at 7pm. Once you’ve attend this info session, if you’re still interested, the Her Adventure Leadership team will reach out to schedule a 20-30 minute virtual interview. If selected, then you’ll organize your first hike. We will have a member of the Her Adventure leadership team present for your first hike to make things go smoothly. After that first hike, you’re able to lead hikes on your own!

What will Her Adventure provide?

The Her Adventure leadership team will provide training, access to the Meet Up event platform for creating hiking events, event templates, hike suggestions, and consultation for hikes. And lots of encouragement along the way!

What do I have to do to lead a hike?

  1. After you’re selected, find a hike you know well enough to lead a group.
  2. You’ll create a MeetUp event posting about this hike. We’ll help you with event templates and ideas. A couple of days before the hike, you’ll send out a reminder email to folks who have signed up.
  3. One the day of the hike, you’ll arrive about 30 minutes early to meet and greet all attendees. You’ll introduce yourself and Her Adventure, describe the hike, ask participants to introduce themselves, and then walk the trail. You must account for everyone during the hike.
  4. After the hike, you’ll say goodbye to folks and invite them (if you’ve pre planned–this is NOT a requirement) to an after hike social at a local restaurant.
  5. After the hike, you’ll let the Her Adventure team know how it went and how many folks showed up.

Do I have to be an outdoor expert?

Nope! We just ask that you know the hike well enough to lead a group–ie know the length, how much elevation gain/loss, if there are stream crossings, etc.

What if I don’t like it?

No biggie. If you find out it’s not for you, you don’t have to continue leading hikes. You’re welcome to continue attending but if leading them isn’t for you, no problem.

How do I get compensated?

With thanks and appreciation. :) You will also receive a free Her Adventure t shirt that we’ll ask you to wear if possible when you’re leading hikes. There is no monetary compensation for this role. It is a volunteer position. Her Adventure hikes are free to participants. If folks donate, we put that toward the expenses of the Meet Up platform and hike giveaways.

I’m ready! What’s next?

Fill out this interest form and attend this session at Radio East.
