Ok it's a warm, hot, no humid summer day in Toronto, and a cold beer right about now would really hit the spot. Or would it?

Well in the old days the water for that beer came from many different places along the shoreline. The Don Valley and our sparkling pristine creeks helped build an industry, but over time pollution built up. And for one body of water, it was the worst. Put it this way, if I refuse to swim in the Don River I might have to refuse a cold one from that same Don River as it was the most disgusting river of all, pollution wise I mean!

However let's play detective and find some interesting old relics of Toronto's beer industry and there were plenty of them and in some very interesting places. The old Ryerson Campus now Metropolitan University was the site of an early Toronto Beer company, or that the twists and turns of Dundas Street was because of the making of beer, and it wasn't because of the alcohol.

Toronto loved beer, and this walk is a love letter to that industry. An industry that goes back deep into the 19th century, and tells the tale of the Irish and Canada brilliantly.

Our walk begins at the centre of Victoria Street and Gould in the heart of old Ryerson University. We end our walk at Parliament and Front Street!

Etienne Brûlé was believed to be the first European to travel the Humber River, and the Toronto Carrying-Place on a secret mission for Samuel de Champlain.

During the 1660s, the Humber River provided food and building material for the Seneca village of Teiaiagon. With the rise of York to the east in 1793, grist mills were built and provided the material for Toronto's growth well into the 19th century. Many historians consider the Humber River watershed the life blood of Toronto and southern Ontario. The Humber River is an historic river and tells the tale of not only Toronto, but also of Canada itself.

This walking tour is for all fitness levels and skills with a few slight hills and dips and some stairs. Please dress for the weather. This walking tour begins at the southeast corner of Eglinton Avenue West and Scarlett Road. We end the tour at Bloor Street West and Jane.

On several tours I have talked about the November 1-2 1935 Quebec Seismic Zone rupture at Teimiskaming, Ontario. That event caused one of the largest earthquakes in eastern Canada. Our west coast is not the only place in Canada that could suffer the shakes, pardon the expression.

The great Grand Banks Earthquake and Tsunami which devastated the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland in 1929 was just one of many to strike Canada, and here in Toronto we are not immune. The Rouge Valley Fault is just one of several faults in the area. These seismic ridges, or popups in Lake Ontario are evidence of seismic pressure, enough said.

And the last rupture of the Cascadia zone just miles off the coast of British Columbia, was in January, 1700. Cities like Victoria, Vancouver, and other coastal cities would have seconds to react when it happens.

But back in 1700, when a powerful Tsunami caused sudden death and destruction in Japan the residents of Edo now Tokyo looked east. What cased that massive wall of water to hit Edo ? Something broke on the coast of North America! Something big!

That same Tsunami was triggered by the most powerful quake ever to hit North America with a reading of 9.5., even bigger than the Alaska quake back in 1964 which struck on Good Friday. That awaits us one day, which is well overdue. 324 years since disaster was unleashed.

The 2004 earthquake and Tsunami off the west coast of Indonesia belongs to the same ring of fire, the same subduction zone complex, and is considered a twin sister to Cascadia.

This last lecture on the Go of the 2024 season concludes with a discussion about the west coast of Canada, and the USA and the impact on Japan during and after the rupture of the Cascadia Fault!
