Title: A Day in the Life of a Backcountry Ranger at Grand Canyon National Park
Description: Emily Krupp will give us a glimpse of her daily life as a backcountry ranger at Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon National Park is a busy place, with close to 5 million visitors per year. A ranger’s job is to protect all that is within the Grand Canyon from harm. This includes educating visitors, managing wildlife, helping hikers who are overheated, dehydrated, and lost, assisting in search and rescue, and dealing with the tragedies that occur at the Grand Canyon.
Hear her first-hand accounts of what it is like to patrol the backcountry in our nation's second-most visited national park, share her passion for wilderness, and discuss the physical and mental health benefits she receives from spending time in nature.
Once a Certified Public Accountant, Emily became a ranger in 2018 and has also worked at Yosemite, Glacier, and Sequoia National Parks. She resides at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with her husband, Matt.
There will be ample time for questions and answers.
Andy Niekamp's Note: I met Emily in June at the Grand Canyon on my Arizona Trail thru hike. In talking with her, I learned her parents live in Cincinnati, and she travels back to Ohio each winter to visit them. I asked her if she would give a program to our outdoor community when she returns to Ohio next, and she said she agreed. Emily is in town for a few days to celebrate the holidays with her family, and we appreciate her making time for this event.
