About us
Explore food and trails in the diverse neighbourhoods of the Greater Toronto Area. We turn the entire city into hiking territory.
Foodie hikes are at a moderate pace of 4 to 6 km/h. They are neither walking tours nor strenuous workouts. We encourage you to research the route beforehand because we won't give much commentary. You should be prepared for unpaved trails, hills, and any weather. Dangerous weather like lightning and low visibility will cancel hikes.
Typically, hikes end at a restaurant. But we'll also pick up takeout and groceries along the way.
Timed hikes
Hikes run like trains. We depart on time and hit scheduled stops. If late or lost, you can refer to the map to find us at these timed checkpoints. You can join or leave at any point according to your schedule and level of fitness.
If you're going below 4 km/h or the minimum stated speed, you might be left behind because we have to keep a schedule. This ensures
- we arrive at food places before they close or get too busy
- we show up on time for restaurant reservations
- others that join in the middle won't wait long at scheduled checkpoints
- we end on time and respect those who need to leave punctually
The list of places on the route are those that we'll pass by. We'll not stop at all of them. If we stop, it won't be more than 5 to 10 minutes. You're free to break from the group and use the map to catch up when you're done. The only time we can sit down to eat is after the hike.
While the hike is ongoing, organizers might not respond to messages. They will be busy leading the group and ordering food. Also, Meetup notifications can be delayed by a few hours!
Omakase
For some hikes, we offer omakase. This is an optional program where participants chip in some money and the organizer will use the collected funds to buy food for sampling. What food to buy, and where and when to share, is entirely up to the organizer. Omakase literally means "I leave it to you".
At some point in the hike, usually during the first leg, the organizer will ask who's interested and collect money. Payment by cash or e-transfer. Please mention dietary restrictions before signing up. We may not be able to accommodate and will advise if you should join. Latecomers are not eligible to sign up if we've already ordered food.
No refunds after orders are placed, even if you left early, got lost, or missed samples for whatever reason. The money would have been already spent on food. We do not make a profit. Leftover funds go to Meetup.com fees.
Situations where we will give a full or partial refund:
- the organizer didn't honour your dietary restrictions and you mentioned it before signing up
- you didn't get your fair share of food because there was not enough to go around
Limited cutlery provided. Bring your own cutlery and containers to save the environment.
Featured businesses do not compensate us. We recommend them because we think they are good or interesting.
Waitlist and attendance policy
If you're on the waitlist for hikes, you can show up and hope that there's space. It's usually OK because of no-shows at free events.
However, if the event is over capacity, the priority is: those on the confirmed list, then the waitlist according to order of sign up. The rest will be asked to leave. We will strictly enforce the number of participants because of safety concerns.
For restaurant events, only those on the confirmed list can attend.
We enforce attendance for hikes with a long waitlist. Organizers will check who did not show up for such hikes. It's selfish to deprive others of the chance to join. It's also inconsiderate to change RSVP at the last minute, because those moved from the waitlist may not have time to react. Of course, there can be legitimate reasons but repeated no-shows will be banned. The event description will mention if we are enforcing attendance.
Pets policy
Pets are welcome but they may not be allowed into some buildings and businesses.
For certain hikes, there may be narrow and steep trails which may not be suitable for your pet. Only you will understand your pet's capabilities. Check the route in advance.
Finally, respect those who may be uncomfortable or allergic to animals by keeping them at a distance, unless they're ok with it.
Photo policy
Photos are welcome but if you're taking pictures of other humans, please ask their permission if you intend to post them anywhere.
No smoking and vaping
Smoking and vaping are prohibited in all hikes. If you must smoke, do it during stops and stay at least 10 metres away from other participants.

Garden to Ravine to Park (9.9 + 4.1 km, 200th hike)
Allan Gardens, 19 Horticultural Avenue, Toronto, ON, CAAttendance policy is enforced for this hike. See below for details.
It's a throwback to our first hike, almost 4 years ago! It encapsulates what our group is about: a bit of nature rambling, urban sights, and lots of food. Since then, all 3 landmarks of the hike have changed drastically.
- Garden: Allan Gardens closed in October 2022 for restorations until May 2025. The towering plants are gone from the Palm House, replaced by an event venue.
- Ravine: Lower Don River Trail closed in March 2023 and is "scheduled to open in Spring 2026", 2 years later than originally planned.
- Park: The northwestern side of Thorncliffe Park closed for subway construction in April 2024. The plaza where Iqbal supermarket was located has been taken over by Metrolinx. Fret not, Iqbal moved to a modern location 500m away.
Even with all the changes, we'll stay close to the original route. Starting from Toronto's oldest public greenhouse,
we'll make our way to gentrified Cabbagetown, lined with an assortment of restaurants. A fast hike through the Don Valley brings us to Thorncliffe Park, with a heavy South Asian presence. For those who want to end there, there is a choice of tantalizing Afghan kabobs, Arabian rice dishes, and Pakistani curries.
To celebrate our 200th hike, we're tacking on a bonus 4 km segment. It's more challenging—see below. The reward is opulent dim sum that can compete with the best in the GTA. Reserve you spot at a separate event.

Dim sum at The Queen (after Garden to Ravine to Park hike)
The Queen Seafood Cuisine, 900 Don Mills Rd. UNIT 2, Toronto, ON, CAThis is a companion event for the Garden to Ravine to Park hike.
Important notes
- You must walk some portion of the hike to join this meal. Sign up for the hike first, even if it's full. Then, sign up here.
- This is a sharing meal. Those at the same table discuss what to order and split the food bill equally.
- Dietary restrictions cannot be accommodated. You can skip some dishes but you'll still have to pay for them.
- Everyone pays for their own drinks. I recommend not ordering anything except tea for the whole table, to keep the bill simple.
- See reservation instructions below.
The Queen Seafood Cuisine is the upscale offering from the famous Congee Queen chain. Dumplings are topped with scallops; siu mai layered with truffles and quail eggs; pies stuffed with chicken and a whole abalone. There are only a handful of first-rate dim sum restaurants in Toronto; this is one of them. It's comparable to the best ones in Richmond Hill and Markham.
RSVP closes 5 days before the event. If there are many people on the waitlist, we may arrange more seats.
Payment
- The $10 fee is a deposit. It will be refunded when you show up for the event.
- If there are spots available when you sign up, you have 24 hours to e-transfer the fee to globaltorontoeats@gmail.com
- If you're on the waitlist for this event, you don't have to pay. Once you're off the waitlist, you have 24 hours to pay. Remember to check your junk mail and Meetup notification settings so that you know when you've snagged a spot.
- Please mention your Meetup.com name in the e-transfer description.
- If you did not register for the hike or pay in time, you will be removed from the attendee list. The next person on the waitlist will get your spot.
- If you paid the deposit but did not attend the hike, you will lose your spot. We will return your deposit.
Cancellation and refund policy
- You can cancel and get a full refund 5 calendar days before the event. For example, if the event is on Friday 7pm, you can cancel without penalty anytime before the preceding Sunday 11:59pm.
- No refunds within 5 calendar days of the event, unless someone can take your place.
- Full refund if the event is cancelled or rescheduled.

Ramble in the Glen (4.2 km)
Viewmount Park, 169 Viewmount Ave, Toronto, ON, CAIn the centre of Toronto are several Glen places: Glencairn, Glen Park, Glen Long, and Glen Grove. However, there are no actual glens. Just quiet suburban houses.
This hike will take in these neighbourhoods and the two minor food streets there: Marlee Ave and Dufferin St. The majority of the residents are of Italian and Portuguese descent, and it's reflected in the eateries in the area. We'll pass by Italian supermakets, cafes, and an old stalwart for frozen meals. Strangely, there are no great Italian restaurants here, so we'll end at either an authentic Colombian restaurant or a greasy Greek fast food joint.
Note: Some notable grocers and bakeries close at 6pm. Come earlier to check out them out.
Highlights
- Viewmount Park (depart 6:30pm)
- Nicky J’s Hot Chicken
- York Beltline Trail / Walter Saunders Memorial Park
- California Sandwiches (depart 7:10pm)
- Lady York Foods
- Columbus Bakery
- Delicacy Kitchen
- Esto es Colombia (arrive 7:45pm)

Runway to Malton (0.8 km + 6.4 km)
Pearson Airport Terminal 1, Mississauga, ON, CAWhat's good to eat at the airport? Not much, and almost nothing before security. Still, we'll go through Pearson Airport Terminals 1 and 3, checking out public art works and the paltry amount of food options.
Airports can be great hiking destinations. The ones in Whitehorse, London Gatwick, and Singapore have trails through the terminals and around the runways, connecting to green spaces. Unfortunately, YYZ is not one of those airports. There is no pedestrian access so we have to settle with taking the (free) train to get out.
In the second part of the hike, we'll head to Malton. It was once the aeronautical hub of Canada and a leading innovator on the world stage. The Avro Arrow aircraft was the crowning achievement and Malton boomed around the aviation industry. However, Avro quickly fell apart after government cuts. Some of the bright minds there went on to NASA for moon missions.
Today, Malton has a neglected feel to it. Even Walmart left the neighbourhood in 2021. Its aviation history lives on in scattered monuments. It's a little corner that Mississauga forgot.
The food landscape here is cheap South Asian food. We'll end at a rejuvenated mall packed with Indian and Pakistani stores, where we have a range of places for snacking.
Highlights
- Inuksuit sculpture at Airport Terminal 1 departure level (depart 2:30pm)
- Artworks at Terminal 1
- Airport train ride
- Terminal 3
- Viscount station (depart 3:05pm)
- Zet's Restaurant
- Food at Flightpath Centre
- Food plazas around Airport Rd and Derry Rd / Mughal Mahal (depart 3:55pm)
- Avro Canada Monument / Malton Sign
- New Cane Grove
- Food court at Westwood Square (arrive 4:40pm)
