2026 Mountaineering # 1: Handies Peak Weekend

***FRIDAY - SUNDAY

MEET at 5pm on Friday in parking lot at safeway parking lot on W. Colorado ave to carpool for 6 hours to Handies via American Basin trailhead (Lake City). EARLIER meeting time preferred.

14er #1. This is a "easier" 14er as it is only 5.3 miles with 2, 500ft elevation gain and features an alpine lake and 360 epic views! *High altitude training highly recommended especially for 1st time 14ers!

Cost: $199 per person for hotel and 4wd vehicle rental and gas. EXPERIENCED 4wd DRIVER appreciated.

HOTEL: ???

OPTION: Durango Rafting, Box Canyon Waterfalls Park, Hard Tack Mine Tour, Animas Fork or another short hike nearby (Lower Cascade Trail). Fees may apply.

Animals: Friendly and manageable dogs are OK but not recommended because long day and high altitude and possible overnight.

Trail conditions: Snow might be at the summit. Hiking poles are recommended.

***NEEDED: WATER, hiking boots, hat, sunglasses, gloves, layered clothing, face mask/ balaclava, sunscreen, first aid kit, additional pair of socks, FOOD (snacks/drinks) to share. Hiking poles will most likely be needed.
