Exploring Brooklyn’s Buried Transit Past

Details

This is a personal exploration walk — not a formal event and not tightly planned.
Expect slow wandering inside subway stations. No fixed route. Just following clues. I’ll be poking around for sealed stairways, unusual walls, strange floor levels, and any signs of the old system — trying to spot remnants through grates or from odd corners..
This walk will only happen if at least 10 people are interested.
🔍 Planned stops include:

  • Borough Hall Station – NYC’s first Brooklyn subway stop, with hidden platforms
  • Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets Station – Where Michael Jackson filmed Bad; two disused platforms still visible
  • Old Trolley Terminal – Possibly near Court Street or Atlantic Avenue
  • Smith–9th Streets Station – The highest rapid transit station outside China

If we wrap up early — or if the old stations don’t reveal much — we might wander over to Brooklyn Heights Promenade, DUMBO, or even take a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Meet inside Penn Station, Manhattan, at the red wall gate to the LIRR Services & Waiting Area (see Photo 1).

Bring a MetroCard or OMNY, and curiosity.
