Help Preview the St. Francis Wood Tour, San Francisco
Details
Sunday, Feb.22nd, will be the first time for this tour. In her book, Stairway Walks in SF, Adah Bakalinsky quotes an architect friend, "St. Francis Wood, has in some places an irrational street design". She goes on to say, "A street in this neighborhood can even diverge into two segments that share the same name". (That's the reason street signs have block numbers as well as the street name.)
Help!, me sort it out this Thursday, as Walking With a Guide, uses Adah's & Mary Burk's map and guide to apply, boots on the ground, in St. Francis Wood.
Mason-McDuffie realtors, started the planning for St.Francis Wood in 1912. By 1925 400 families were living in the development. One of the earliest on the western side of the City. Berkeley architect Henry Gutterson was hired to layout the development based on classical Beaux-Arts tradition.
About three miles of walking, fairly level. Wear sturdy footwear.
Look for parking along Ulloa Ave. West Portal Station is about two blocks away, Muni bus #43 or #48. Check me on this though?
Meet on the Ulloa Ave. side at the bottom of the pedestrian overpass, that goes over Portola Ave. (West side of Portola I think.)
Take a look at the photos from the 1910s showing the building of the Twin Peaks Tunnel extending the electric trolleys to the western side, the outside lands of San Francisco, allowing development of St. Francis Wood and Forest Hill among others. The West Portal neighborhood was developed by Fernando Nelson and sons.
This is the first time for this tour so a little more exciting on this occasion. I have local historic locations (see the attached photos) and heritage architecture sites (addresses). We'll find these with an excellent map with a good pre-planned route to follow. So join, me in exploring this San Francisco neighborhood on a new tour.
The local Gregangelo Museum, is located at, 225 San Leandro Way, a private art house. It is described as an impassioned, multifaceted immersive experience (requiring advance reservations) created by Gregangelo and a team of dedicated artists over a span of four plus decades.
The many exploration experiences here will Ignite your senses, awaken your imagination, and arouse wonderment. You can dare to venture on one of their introspective journeys where fantasies become realities by reserving here.
