Hike through Great Falls Park and River Bend Park.
Mather Gorge and Great Falls are the scenic highlights of the DC area. This hike runs along the river for several miles, then up into the forested hills along the river. We will then loop up to the less frequented trails in River Bend Park
Time Hike leaves 9 am. Please be a few minutes early.
Where to Meet: Great Falls Visitor center-bottom of the ramp.
Difficulty Moderate. A few steep sections. I like to hike at a brisk pace so not a good hike for new or out of shape hikers. Do not sign up unless you are used to hiking fast. Slow hikers may be left be left behind. Make sure to pick up a trail map when you pay the entrance fee.
Distance 9-10 miles
Duration: 4 hours about
Scenery: Rolling woodlands, spectacular views of Great Falls, Mather Gorge, and the Potomac River.
Trail surface: mostly dirt/muddy when wet. Some gravel.
Facilities: There are rest room facilities at the visitor center and several spots on the hike.
Fees: There is a $20 per vehicle park entrance fee.
Elevation Gain: some up and down. Maybe a few hundred feet.
Dogs: NO
To Bring; Water, snacks, insect repellent, rain gear.
