Join us for a fantastic conditioning hike up to the Nike Missile Control Site LA-94C historical site starting from Veterans Memorial Community Regional Park in Sylmar. This is quite possibly the hardest conditioning hike I post due to some extremely steep sections. You will be breathing hard for sure and it sure beats that boring treadmill/elliptical in the gym. You'll get a much better workout too.

TRAINING CONCEPT:
The focus will be to get a great cardio, butt, and leg workout going up very steep inclines. This will essentially be a form of interval training, which is actually quite effective for increasing your cardio capacity/fitness level. We'll all push ourselves a bit to get our heart rate up and then catch our breath and re-group at the junctions and hilltops.

DIFFICULTY: VERY ADVANCED
You already need to be well conditioned for this workout. Although the distance is relatively short this is a high intensity workout and several sections are extremely steep. We'll be power-walking uphill to get our heart rate up to improve our conditioning. Due to the steepness it is important to wear shoes with great traction or you will most likely slip and fall.

To serve the best interest of the group, as well as, yourself please make sure this hike is appropriate for your ability level before signing up. If in doubt please contact me (Stein).

THE PLAN:
We'll meet at the upper end of the western parking lot of Veterans Memorial Community Regional Park (see photo below) at about 9:50 AM, do some stretching and introductions etc. and get started heading up the trail at 10:00 AM. We will follow the trail to the top and then head east to the missile site where we will enjoy the view and have some snacks before heading back. We will take some different trails on the way back down that are not quite as steep.

DISTANCE & ELEVATION GAIN:
About 6 miles and about 3150 ft. or so cumulative elevation gain.

TIME REQUIRED:
About 3 hours or so.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Trail running shoes or flexible hiking booths with plenty of traction (important)
  • Hydration system (best) or bottle with water or Gatorade etc.
  • Your cell phone
  • Consider layered clothing including a light wind breaker jacket

PARKING:
There should be plenty of parking in the Veterans Memorial Community Regional Park parking lot. Make sure you make a left when entering the park. You will see the parking lot at the end of the road.

NO SHOWS:
It is inconsiderate to the organizer and anyone on the waiting list to RSVP and not show up, therefore I am registering no-shows. For this event you need to change your RSVP to "No" minimum 45 minutes before the start of the event. If you have multiple no-shows on your record you will be considered unreliable and may not be admitted to certain events and when there people on the waiting list.
(Event is cross-posted)
