Time: 8:00am (please be prompt because we will leave by 8:05am)
Who Should Attend: Only experienced hikers who are physically capable of hiking 11 miles in the snow with ~3000 ft elevation gain within the time posted above.
Hike Description: This is a loop hike and it will be approximately 11 miles in length. We will depart from the Sulfur Canyon Trailhead and follow it to Faulty Trail. Will then head south on the Faulty Trail to Cienega Trail. Cienega trail is one of the access routes to the Crest Trail, gaining 1600ft in 1.8 miles. Once we reach the Crest Trail we will follow it South until we intersect with Cañoncito Trail. We will take Cañoncito down the mountain and to our cars. This is one BIG loop. Somewhere along the way we’ll find a place to stop and have a snack/lunch break.
Gear: microspikes are required and trekking poles are highly recommended. I’m expecting trails to be snow packed and icy, with new snow accumulation on Friday.
Fees: There is a $5.00 parking fee at this trail head, unless you have a Sandia Mountain Parking pass or National Park Pass. If you don't have an pass you can buy a day pass the night before at https://www.recreation.gov/sitepass/74386 .
Dog Policy: Not allowed this time.
Weather Notice: If inclement weather looks imminent, please check this site 45 minutes prior to the departure time.
Unplugged Hike: This means that you are more than welcome to bring your cell phones, but that they just need to be on silent during the hike.
