PLEASE NOTE 9:00 START TIME; ALSO, BE ADVISED THAT PARKING IS EXTREMELY LIMITED AT THIS TH, WE FREQUENTLY NEED TO HAVE A PLAN B IN PLACE IN CASE THERE IS NOT SUFFICIENT ROOM FOR OUR CARS TO PARK. HOPEFULLY IT'LL WORK OUT FOR US. WE WILL ALSO NEED TO CARPOOL TO BRING AS FEW CARS AS WE CAN.
All those who sign up to hike this day should give some thought to our Plan B route (have a suggestion in mind for the Group) in case there's not enough parking spots to accommodate us.
Deadwood Peak (not an official name) starts in Tesuque at the beginning of the Winsor Trail, but instead of bearing right onto the Winsor, we bear left to an immediate uphill climb trail. It is a steady climb to its summit, about 3 miles (6 miles RT), mostly Moderate Plus in terms of grade/steepness. An open area, offering little to no shade, almost always sunny & dry, too hot in warmer months. If you've not been before, it offers views different from most other trails we hike. It is not an easy climb, so only sturdy hikers should sign up. But it's not as strenuous as some others we hike, like Circle or Tessa's Trail. I don't know elevation gain, maybe 1500 ft over 3 miles. It's an up & back, so pretty much all downhill for the 2nd half :)
Burro Hikes are for experienced hikers, most of our hikes are moderate in difficulty (by our standards), usually on designated trails, usually 4-6 miles in distance unless otherwise specified.
Non-aggressive, well-mannered dogs are welcome on all my hikes (unless otherwise specified, some locations prohibit dogs).
Newcomers are welcome on all my hikes; I ask that newcomers please test your fitness for my Group by timing yourself hiking up and down Atalaya, which you should be able to do comfortably in 3 1/2 hours or less (from Wilderness Gate or staircase, using Steep Route option). If you have any questions about this, or about my hikes in general, please feel free to contact me through Meet Up Messaging or by text.
We meet at the DeVargas Mall, in the back lot, behind the stores. We now park near the bowling alley, but not right up against the building, one lane or so over. We carpool to all THs. Please offer your driver $2 to cover gas expense for this hike. We like to leave promptly so if you're running just a few minutes late, text me, & we'll wait up to 5 minutes for you.
