Please be considerate of others and do not RSVP for this hike if you cannot go up and down Atalaya in under 3 hours. This helps us to stay together as a group, enhancing the hiking experience for everyone. It is not about competition, but cooperation. This is a group hike and participants are expected to stay with the group. To attend this hike, you must be vaccinated against Covid-19 and must be in compliance with CDC rules on isolation and quarantine. No firearms or commercial solicitations.
Hike Description:
Coyote Call and the Alamo Boundary trails are located past Los Alamos, across from the Valles Caldera about 1.25 hours away from Santa Fe. We'll start at Alamo Boundary trail head and follow the trail gently upward to Coyote Call trail, where we'll enjoy on and off views of the Valles Caldera. We'll make a U-turn, gain some elevation and return to Alamo Boundary trail for the return segment. This area was lightly touched by the 2022 wildfire, and a few limited burns are evident. The vegetation is split between open meadow, conifer forest and aspen groves. The wildflowers are not great right now, but there are some hare bells, elderberry, raspberries, Rydberg penstemon, wood sorel and the fungi were widespread earlier this week, It's an interesting mix which provides habitat to plenty of elk and a wide variety of birds (though the group may scare them off before we see them).
What to bring:
Sturdy hiking boots or shoes.
Layers, extra clothing, and water resistant outer wear.
Water for a 3+ hour hike.

Meeting Place:
DEVARGAS. We will meet behind Market Street at Devargas Center, but a little closer to the bowling alley. We leave promptly at the meet time. If you are running late or your plans change at the last minute, please call Ken: 248-252-0708.
Dogs: No dogs per national monument rules.
Cost/Driving: Non-drivers are to contribute $10 for gas.
Please be considerate to folks on the wait list and remove yourself from the 'go' list promptly once you know you won't attend. If you have difficulty doing that, contact me and I'll change your status.
Waiver and Release. By attending, the Participant releases the Event Leaders from liability arising from the Event and assumes all risks of the Event, including (without limitation): 1) injuries from falls, living things, pre-existing health conditions, vehicles, and weather, and 2) injuries resulting from the Event Leaders not undertaking the least risky option available (e.g., hiking a steep slope instead of a gentle slope, not aborting the hike when rain starts) or not treating an injury in the optimal way (e.g., due to insufficient training or failure to appreciate the severity of an injury or condition). The preceding sentence supplements any other exculpatory arrangement to which the Participant is subject.
