*Re-post of 3/12/22 Event8
Hike Start Time: 9:30 AM
Meeting Time and Location: 9:15 AM (or early as needed to park and be ready), Don Castro Regional Recreation Area – 22400 Woodroe Avenue, Hayward, CA 94541. We’ll meet near the northwest corner of the parking lot and begin hiking by 9:30.
There is a $5.00 day use fee.
The beginning of the hike will be around the reservoir, winding around the shoreline and through groves of trees, after which we’ll climb a bit up to Five Canyons Parkway, crossing over it. The route takes us up to the Chabot-to-Garin Trail, to open hills. We’ll go as far as the boundary of Garin, then return mostly in an out-and-back fashion. Before we get to Five Canyons Parkway, we’ll turn onto Newt Pond Trail, varying our way back over this last section.

In an upcoming hike, we’ll pick up the next BART segment from the Garin/Dry Creek side.
The weather projects to be nice and sunny, and warming up a bit, with highs in the mid- to upper 70’s though the length of our hike; cool out at our start time (around 60). Plan on layers, wear with sturdy footwear; bring sunblock, 2 liters of water minimum, or as needed, and snacks/lunch. Lunch break will be at the mid-point, more or less. We will hike at about a 2.5 mi/hr pace – the elevation gain/loss is moderate. We should be back at our cars around 3:00/3:30 PM – time approximate.
