What we're about

(Modified from our founder's original statement.)

This group is meant for people who want to explore the Bay Area Ridge Trail (RT) and other Bay Area trails or who just enjoy hiking and exploring. Since our hikes are normally in the 10-12 miles range with 1000-2000 feet elevation gain, some hiking experience or at least a reasonable fitness level is expected of you to join us.

Additionally (and the reason for the “More” in the group name), we plan to explore: 1. The State Parks of California and 2. The National Parks of the USA.

DISCLAIMER: You take all risks when joining an event, including of being of reasonable fitness or experience to embark on difficult hikes. We are here just to come up with hiking events and lead the way.

Bay Area Ridge Trail - Sierra Vista Open Space -- 9.8 mi / 2,614 ft

I’ve previously focused on the “& More” part of this Bay Area Ridge Trail & More group; this week we’ll check off an eponymous segment of this Meetup. We will have some good views of the Santa Clara Valley, and beyond, with some ridgeline sections alternating with descents and climbs (two each way). This trial is rated “Hard” on AllTrails (but those of you who have hiked with me regularly this past year have managed these trails well enough).

Parking has been tough this past year, so let’s meet up a bit earlier than usual --- let’s meet at 9:30 (or however early you need to get there to secure parking), and begin our hike promptly at 9:45 AM.

Meeting location is at Sierra Road Staging Area parking lot, located at approximately 5345 Sierra Rd, San Jose, CA 95132 , near the northern boundary of Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve. The pin in the map below displays as Boccardo Loop Trail trailhead:

The parking lot is on the right side of the road - click on the satellite layer in the lower left corner, zoom in to see what to expect when our looking for the parking lot. We will begin the hike at the Kestrel Trail connector.

Weather Underground forecast:

Looks like the daytime high will be in the upper 60’s, low 50’s in the morning when we start. Forecast says cloudy, but the trail is mostly exposed – prepare for wind or direct sunlight, as conditions can always vary.

Dress accordingly, including layers as needed. It could still be wet from last weekend’s rain – be sure to have sturdy footwear and consider poles for some of the steeper sections. Bring sunblock, at least 2 liters of water, and snacks/lunch. We will break for lunch at the halfway point.

We’ll hike at a moderate pace, approx. 2 miles/hr. I’ve noted a finish time of 3:30, but the time can vary somewhat, either way – consider that for your planning purposes.

Considering carpooling to help with the parking situation, and of course, the environment.

We will enjoy a refreshing adult beverage and some food post-hike, location TBD
